The Unknown Serviceman of the Vietnam Era These photos were taken on Memorial Day weekend 1984 in the U.S.Capitol Rotunda. It appeared in the Marines magazine July 1984 edition. One member from each branch of service, Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines were on every team. There were several teams, maybe 24, I can't remember. Each team marched out (at a very slow pace, slow motion) and formed a circle around the casket. We stood at attention for 30 minutes and then were relieved by another team. Each team had a commissioned officer from one of the branches standing at the head of the casket giving the commands. You could hear a pin drop when we came out. I'm the Marine in this photo, we were the first shift to stand guard. The public stood in line outside the Capitol and filed thru for 3 days. The ceremony went on all weekend and ended on Memorial Day 1984. As with any military ceremony in D.C. we rehearsed for weeks. They weren't about to risk someone getting hurt , lost or just not showing up, so we slept in offices and conference rooms on cots in the U.S. Capitol and were not allowed to leave. Additional photos are from the same magazine edition. President Reagan placing a wreath at the casket, the Body Bearers putting the casket in the Hearse, the long march to Arlington Cemetary and the casket in front of the Toumb of the Unknown Soldier. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Submitted by Jeff Blackburn
